Registered dietitian offers tips for healthier Super Bowl snacking

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s almost Super Bowl Sunday and for some people the only thing as big as the game is their appetites.

Pizza, chicken wings and nachos are staples at Super Bowl parties.

But registered dietitian Jennifer Paterson of Sedona North says the day doesn’t have to be filled with ready-to-eat convenience foods and deep-fried snacks.

“Have things like some raw veggies with some low-fat dip or some hummus on the side,” she says. “You could also make really nice platters that have some fresh meats or some low-fat cheese mixed with different types of vegetables and fruits.”

Paterson also suggests grilled chicken skewers, low-sodium nachos with lean ground beef and lots of vegetables, and different kinds of salads as healthier alternatives.

If you can’t resist the deep-fried, high-fat goodies Paterson says to make sure there are healthier items next to them

“I always bring it back to how we distribute our plate. So if three-quarters of our plate is deep-fried foods then we might be veering off in the wrong direction,” she says.

“But maybe if a quarter of your plate has those more savoury, higher-fat snacks like chicken wings or deep-fried things, you could do a quarter plate and then half your plate with vegetables and fruits and then look at maybe some whole grains as well.”

Paterson also says to watch what you drink and how much. She says safe drinking guidelines suggest up to two drinks for women and three for men. She also says to have some alcohol-free and low-calorie drinks during the day.
